Evolution and vision

Solarcentury was founded in 1998, initially focusing on innovative solar solutions for homes and other small rooftop projects.

From humble beginnings, we developed quickly into a company with a reputation for cutting-edge residential, industrial and commercial-scale installations, in the UK and abroad.

We were one of the leading forces in establishing the UK as a major European solar market, while simultaneously expanding into other markets, first in Europe and later in Latin America and Africa.

Over time, our expertise and engineering prowess enabled us to play a leading role in the British solar farm market, becoming the first company to deploy more than 500MWp in the UK. In 2016, we were named the top EPC company in the UK “by some margin.”

Now approaching our twentieth year, Solarcentury has deployed well over 1GWp of solar across more than 1000 sites in four continents. The company is cash rich and debt free, providing a solid base for our ongoing international expansion. The huge experience and expertise we have gained at the forefront of the UK solar sector from its very beginning, is now being successfully exported all around the world. Current projects include major ground-mounted developments in Mexico, Chile and Spain.

Today we provide our clients with a fully integrated IPP platform, offering opportunities for acquisition and development in multiple markets and the ability to deploy capital at scale. Our ready made platform provides an end-to-end service: developing, structuring finance, building and operating solar projects at commercial and utility scale. In 2017 we have a 3GW pipeline across four continents, with offices in seven countries, in addition to our UK Headquarters.

Approach

The Solarcentury team is highly qualified, with over 150 professionals led by senior executives with extensive experience in the renewable energy and power sector. They are backed by an experienced and forward-thinking Board that includes VantagePoint Venture Partners, Ecos Sustainable Equity, Scottish Equity Partners, Zouk Capital and our founder Dr Jeremy Leggett.

The management team collectively has over 100 years’ experience in the renewable energy sector, backed by a local development team in each region with a successful track record of end-to-end project delivery and operation.

The team has developed over 10GW, constructed 3GW and financed more than 2GW of renewable assets throughout their careers. In the UK, Solarcentury has a 96% success rate in terms of large-scale projects entering the challenging UK Local Authority planning process, being approved and constructed. This near perfect domestic record is now being replicated in international markets throughout Latin America, East Africa and mainland Europe.

Our established local presence in some of the most attractive global solar markets allows us to capitalise on their full growth potential. We have teams in the UK, Iberia, Netherlands, France, Germany, Kenya, Mexico, Chile and Panama. Our skilled, expert people on the ground provide local knowledge and have a track-record of working successfully with a network of proven, trusted partners. This includes success in international renewable energy auctions in Mexico, France, Spain and the Netherlands.

Our investment in core target markets in Europe and Latin America has created a development pipeline of over 3 GWp.

Mission

Solarcentury is in business for a purpose: to make a meaningful difference in the fight against climate change through the widespread adoption of solar power.
Solar PV is of critical importance in delivering a low and then zero carbon world and doing so cost effectively.

The world’s leading investors and analysts agree that “subsidy-free” solar is already here in multiple markets. As solar prices continue to fall, production capacity increases and the industry continues to innovate, that trend will accelerate. Solar is quick to deploy and it’s scalable; it is already playing a leading role in the transition to renewable, safe power, and is disrupting traditional utility models in the process.

We are a big believer in helping solar change our world for the better and in empowering others through the technology. We do this in a number of ways;
The Company contributes 5% of our net profits every year to the charity we founded, SolarAid, which aims to eradicate polluting, expensive kerosene lamps from Africa by 2020. Numerous staff also provide additional in kind support.
We develop a habitat plan for each ground-mounted project to ensure seeds, plants and trees are selected and grown in a way that encourages species biodiversity whilst maximising the efficiency of the panels.
We engage with local organisations, schools and small businesses to help them understand more about global warming and solar energy.
Our projects are managed to high environmental standards from the procurement phase to the construction, recycling materials and composting food waste. We hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS and are members of PV Cycle.
