CroydonFAIRVIEW NEW HOMES: Queens Gate, Croydon How to deliver a Local Authority 10% carbon reduction requirement simply and add value to your development
Queens Gate, Croydon, is a large scale, low carbon development from Fairview New Homes. A mixed-use site of 360 residential units, the high density housing project is designed to minimise carbon emissions in the built environment whilst maximise the use of available land. The development is a nationwide first, demonstrating the simplicity of providing low carbon, high density housing with a new solar solution from Solarcentury - ‘The Complete Solar Roof’.
This is the largest scale application of the UK developed solar technology to date. The combination of solar electric and solar thermal roof tiles from Solarcentury, known as C21e and C21t, enables homes to both generate their own clean electricity and heat water. On completion, Fairview will have installed over 1,000 solar electric, and over 900 solar thermal tiles. The total energy contribution of the technologies will be 104,243 kWh per year, delivering annual carbon reductions of over 36 tonnes of CO2 for the site. Covering five blocks to the south, the solar electric tiles will provide 44,243 kWh (units) of electricity per year for community use. Feeding into a distribution board, the electricity will be used for communal lighting. The solar thermal tiles also cover five blocks, to the north, providing a total of 60,000 kWh for hot water.
Developers seeking to reduce their on-site carbon emissions using renewable energy are often presented with confusing claims about the reliability, predictability and suitability of different technologies. But in the urban and semi urban environment, roof integrated solar tiles are an obvious choice, both aesthetically and in terms of carbon emission reduction. As Fairview and a number of other house builders are now concluding, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal tiles offer an excellent, effective and straightforward building solution to the challenge of carbon reduction. Adding value to their development, Fairview’s commitment to the 10% carbon reduction target now offers homebuyers the choice of ‘reduced electricity bills for life’.
Comments Fairview New Homes Director Terry Rood: “The provision of C21e and C21t has made this project extremely original, and we anticipate significant consumer demand as a result. The Merton Rule encouraged us to add value to our buildings, which we believe have set a blueprint for the future. Fairview New Homes is delighted to be involved in a nationwide first.”
Fairview is the first of a number of developers now looking to install Solarcentury’s Complete Solar Roof on a large scale into UK housing. Solarcentury has worked with many other house builders including St James, Barratt and Gleeson homes.
