In a massive upgrade of London’s Blackfriars station, Network Rail was expanding into Blackfriars Bridge, built across the Thames in 1886. They planned to add a roof and wanted to make it more sustainable.
Solarcentury would install over 4,400 PV panels on the bridge’s new roof. The challenges included multiple roofs and slopes, as well as working high up, over water and with live train lines all around.
With over 6,000m² of PV panels, Blackfriars is now the world’s largest solar-powered bridge, providing 50% of the station’s energy and saving over 500,000 kg of CO2.
